Private Manoeuvres is a bit of a quirky gem, blending comedy and romance in a way that feels very much of its time. Tzvi Shissel's direction captures the absurdity of mandatory military life in Israel with a light-hearted touch. The pacing shifts between slapstick humor and more tender moments, especially as Yudale, the central character, navigates his duties and romantic entanglements. The dynamic between him and Sergeant Shemesh adds a layer of camaraderie that feels genuine, even amid the more outlandish scenarios. You get a real sense of the cultural backdrop too, with the whole Swiss Ambassador's wife subplot adding a layer of intrigue. The performances are earnest, and there’s a certain charm in how the practical effects play out, giving it a unique flavor.
Subtitled versions available.Might appeal to fans of military comedies.Considered a cultural snapshot of 1980s Israel.
