Promised Lands is this intriguing documentary that really digs into the idea of borders and how they exist only because we say they do. The film opens with a haunting narration that sets a meditative tone. You get this raw atmosphere, especially with the interruptions from family conversations in rural Uganda, which adds a layer of authenticity. The pacing feels unhurried, almost contemplative, allowing the viewer to absorb the reflections on land and identity. There’s a distinct contrast between the serene landscapes and the weight of the dialogue. It makes you think about the arbitrary nature of borders and the stories tied to land, all while keeping it grounded in a personal narrative. Quite a unique piece, really.
