Puppet (1999) is one of those films that creeps up on you. It starts off with this seemingly simple premise—a couple, a gift, a hidden danger—but then dives into the murky waters of crime and deceit. The atmosphere is thick with tension, especially as Lori, played with a certain innocence, unwittingly becomes embroiled in a web of smuggling and intrigue. The pacing is a bit uneven, but it lends to the feeling of disorientation that Lori experiences. Practical effects, especially with the puppet itself, add a unique touch to the narrative. It’s got that late '90s vibe, where the darkness of human nature is explored in ways that feel raw and unfiltered. Not quite mainstream, but definitely worth a look.
Interesting exploration of themes of trust and betrayal.Unique use of practical effects for the puppet's design. An unexpected take on the crime thriller genre.
