Purgatory is one of those films that really captures the desperation and grit of its setting. You’ve got two Peace Corps volunteers caught in a nightmarish scenario after being framed in an oppressive women's prison in Africa. The atmosphere is thick with tension—both in the physical environment and the relationships that develop. The pacing has a relentless quality, driving home the urgency of their plight. There’s a rawness to the performances that adds to the film’s overall impact. It’s not overly polished, which lends it a certain authenticity. And while it doesn’t shy away from the brutal reality of incarceration, it also hints at themes of resilience and solidarity. Definitely a film that lingers in your mind long after viewing.
