Red Deer is one of those rare films that captures the essence of isolation in a small town. The pacing feels deliberate, almost languid at times, allowing the viewer to really soak in the atmosphere of the Canadian prairie. You’ve got this oddball ensemble of characters who all seem to be grappling with their own desires and disappointments. Rose, the newcomer, brings a fresh twist with her job as a phone-sex operator, which makes for some intriguing dynamics, especially with Nigel, the aspiring poet who’s just a bit lost. There’s a surreal quality to the whole thing, balanced with moments of stark realism. The performances are solid, and the film’s themes of connection and alienation linger long after watching.
