This 1993 Met production of Wagner's Parsifal is quite a spectacle, honestly. Otto Schenck’s set design really shines, especially after his work on the Ring cycle. The atmosphere is thick with Wagnerian depth, and while Kurt Moll delivers a solid Gurnemanz, it feels like he’s lost some of that earlier richness from his Karajan recording. The pacing meanders a bit, typical for Wagner, but that gives you time to really soak in the visual artistry. It’s all about that ethereal quality, isn’t it? The practical effects are interesting too, blending traditional staging with a modern touch, which adds to the overall vibe. Definitely a unique experience for those who appreciate the nuances of opera on film.
Great set design that enhances the performance.Kurt Moll gives a solid, if not quite velvety, Gurnemanz.Atmosphere captures the essence of Wagner's themes.
