Roomless is this gritty little slice of life that digs into the monotony and despair of urban existence. Wai, played by Tiny Gary, really brings that sense of lost potential to life – you can almost feel his frustration with the world around him. The pacing is slow, almost languid, which fits the themes of stagnation perfectly. It’s shot in a way that captures the cramped, oppressive feeling of his 100 square-foot room, almost like a character itself. The humor is dark and very dry, creating an atmosphere that’s both bleak and oddly relatable. Those practical effects – or lack thereof – really make you aware of the isolation. Not a typical comedy-drama blend, but it’s intriguing in its own right.
