Rose Hill (1997) has an intriguing mix of drama and western elements that really captures a particular vibe of the era. The pacing is slow but deliberate, allowing the viewer to absorb the characters' struggles and growth. The story of four orphan boys turning into pseudo-guardians for a baby amidst their own flight from justice feels oddly tender, albeit with a rough edge. The way they set up a ranch and name it Rose Hill adds a layer of hope in their otherwise tumultuous lives. There’s a certain charm in the performances, especially as Mary Rose matures and gets pulled into the complexities of love and loyalty, which feels very authentic. It’s not a perfect film by any means, but its earnestness and exploration of family are distinct.
