Roseanna is a solid thriller that dips into the murky waters of crime in Sweden. It’s based on a novel by Sjöwall and Wahlöö, which gives it a gritty authenticity that you don’t see in many modern thrillers. The atmosphere is heavy, almost suffocating at times, reflecting the bleakness of the investigation. Alfredson's direction keeps the pacing steady; it doesn’t rush but rather allows tension to build up gradually. The performances are quite grounded, especially from the lead detective, Martin Beck, whose weary determination feels real. There’s a certain understated quality to the film, and it avoids flashy effects, opting instead for a raw, realistic portrayal of police work and the emotional toll of a murder case. It’s compelling and doesn’t shy away from the darker aspects of humanity.
