Rumpelstilzchen (2009) is a family film that plays with the darker edges of the classic fairy tale. The atmosphere is quite tense, especially with the miller’s daughter, Lisa, locked away in that room of straw. The pacing feels almost claustrophobic, as the clock ticks down on her dire situation. There's a rawness to the performances that gives the film a certain weight, even if the acting isn't always flawless. Practical effects are used to evoke the magical elements, which lends a charm that CGI often lacks. It’s distinctive in its approach to the source material, focusing more on the psychological stress of the character rather than just the fantastical. Not your usual light-hearted family fare.
Focus on the film's darker themes.Note the practical effects used.Interesting take on the source material.
