Saru Lock: The Movie has this odd blend of action, comedy, and drama that's hard to pin down. Saru, the locksmith, is hilarious in his cluelessness, especially when it comes to women. The film sets this light yet tense tone as he gets embroiled with yakuza gangsters over a briefcase of stolen cash. The pacing is a bit uneven, bouncing between laugh-out-loud moments and some surprisingly dramatic turns. It’s interesting how they mix practical effects with some over-the-top sequences. The performances feel genuine, especially the lead's awkward charm, which really draws you in. It’s this quirky mash-up that makes it stand out in the indie scene of its time.
