So, Scalps is this wild little gem from '83, directed by Fred Olen Ray. It’s got this goofy vibe with a group of college science students who think it’s a bright idea to dig up an Indian burial ground. The atmosphere is campy, but it manages to create some decent tension as they awaken Black Claw, an evil spirit that takes over one of their own. The pacing's a bit uneven, shifting from silly banter to bloody chaos, which is kind of part of its charm. The practical effects are fairly low-budget but have this gritty authenticity that gives the film personality. And the performances? Well, they lean into the absurdity, which just makes the whole experience more enjoyable in a bizarre way.
