See For Yourself (2020) is this gritty horror flick that dives into the chaos of a house party gone awry. The tension builds as we follow a Deaf teenager who, feeling isolated, becomes trapped in this wild scene. The sound design is interesting, or lack thereof, really heightens the unease, making the audience feel her disorientation. The practical effects are raw, not overly polished, which adds to that feral atmosphere. You can really sense the unpredictability of the partygoers. It’s a film that explores themes of vulnerability and isolation without the usual tropes, and the performances, especially from the lead, are genuine and compelling. It’s not your average horror movie, that’s for sure.
