Senso is really something else. Luchino Visconti crafts a richly textured narrative about love and betrayal set against the backdrop of the Austro-Italian War. The pacing has this languid quality, almost dreamlike, which captures the Countess’ internal turmoil perfectly. You can feel the tension through the lush cinematography and the lavish set designs, every frame feels deliberate. The performances, particularly from Alida Valli, give a raw authenticity to her character’s descent into obsession and despair. It’s this blend of political unrest and personal conflict that makes the film stand out, a fascinating exploration of desire and loyalty torn apart by war.
Senso has seen various formats over the years, but original releases on 35mm are quite rare and sought after by collectors. There are some beautiful Blu-ray restorations, but they often lack the warmth of the film's original aesthetic. Interest in Visconti's works continues to grow, so finding a clean print is becoming harder. The film's historical context and thematic depth definitely contribute to its value among collectors.
