Seventh Son has this earthy, gritty vibe that’s kind of refreshing for a fantasy flick. The film dives into this world where John Gregory, a seasoned spook, is looking for someone to take over his unique, if not somewhat burdensome, legacy. The pacing has its lulls, but it lets the atmosphere breathe, especially in those darker scenes where the witches emerge. There’s a nice blend of practical effects that give a tangible feel to the creatures, which is a nice throwback. Jeff Bridges as Gregory brings this gruff charm, and while the story can feel a bit familiar, the way it tackles themes of mentorship and legacy has its moments. It’s not groundbreaking but it has its own distinct flavor.
