Shadows in the Garden is one of those curious little gems that creeps into your collection and sticks with you. The film has this haunting atmosphere, punctuated by the rain-soaked town setting. The pacing is deliberate, letting the tension build slowly as we get to know the monster, who’s surprisingly layered. You don’t often see a creature feature where the monster’s emotional stakes are front and center, and it really shifts the narrative focus. Practical effects give it that gritty, raw feel, which contrasts nicely with the moody performances by Gollinger, Spitzer, and Kumpon. It’s not your typical horror fare, but there's something about its unique take on the genre that makes it quite distinctive.
