Shanghai Grand is a curious blend of action, crime, and a touch of romance, wrapped in the gritty underbelly of 90s Shanghai. The atmosphere is thick with tension as Hui Man Keung washes ashore, only to find himself embroiled in a world defined by loyalty and betrayal. Ding Lik’s rise from a humble beggar to a powerful figure has this kind of tragic inevitability to it, drawing viewers into a tale of ambition that ultimately leads to moral ambiguity. The pacing feels a bit uneven at times, but there’s something about the performances that anchors it all—especially the dynamic between Ding Lik and Fung Ching Ching. The practical effects are a nice touch, adding a rawness that complements the film’s themes of love and ambition in a dark cityscape.
