Shrek the Third is an interesting follow-up in the franchise. Chris Miller takes over directing here, and the tone is lighter, almost more whimsical than its predecessors. The pacing feels a bit uneven at times, particularly in the second act, which can drag. The focus on family and responsibility runs deeper, especially with Shrek’s desire to escape to his swamp. The voice performances, especially from Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy, have their usual charm. There are some fun new characters, but they sometimes feel like they compete for attention rather than blend in. The animation quality is solid, and there are some nice practical effects that stand out, though it doesn’t quite hit the heights of the first two films.
