Slow Down is an interesting slice-of-life drama that captures the complexities of youth in Osaka. The film revolves around three guys - a bike racer, a tough yakuza, and a privileged rich kid - and their interactions with a girl from Tokyo. The atmosphere is thick with nostalgia and that sense of being on the cusp of adulthood. The pacing has a kind of languid feel, reflecting the meandering thoughts and lives of the characters. What’s notable is how it weaves in themes of friendship and identity while touching on the struggles of class differences. There are no flashy effects here, just raw, honest performances that feel very grounded. Shimada's adaptation of his own book adds a layer of authenticity that you can really sense.
