Smart People is one of those films that gently pokes at the absurdities of intellect and emotional disconnect. Dennis Quaid plays Professor Wetherhold, this brilliant yet deeply flawed character who just can’t seem to figure out life beyond academic accolades. The pacing isn’t frantic, more like a slow burn that allows the awkwardness of family dynamics to simmer. Sarah Jessica Parker and Thomas Haden Church add a nice flavor, bringing warmth and wit. There’s a hint of dark humor woven through the drama, making the moments of introspection feel more relatable. It’s a film that thrives on its character interactions rather than grand gestures, and the practical effects of everyday life ring true throughout.
