Socratic Love is a quirky blend of comedy and introspection from 2013. You’ve got Hiro, this lesser-known comedian, whose journey feels both relatable and painfully awkward. His growing distance from Kano, his girlfriend, creates an undercurrent of tension that runs through the film. It's filled with moments that are both funny and a bit melancholic, especially as we see Hiro being dragged around by the more seasoned Satoyama. The pacing sometimes wobbles, reflecting Hiro’s own uncertainties. Then there’s the subplot with the picture book and Kaminuma, which adds a layer of depth and whimsy. The performances are charmingly imperfect, giving it an indie feel that sets it apart. It’s a unique look at the balance between personal ambition and relationships.
