Somewhere or Other is a contemplative drama that navigates the struggles of adolescence and the search for identity. You’ve got Zhang, who’s deeply mired in a dull routine, and DaChang, the more vibrant character with his secret base and kung fu skills. It’s interesting how their dynamic evolves. There’s a sense of melancholy that permeates Zhang’s journey, which contrasts sharply with DaChang’s escapism. The pacing is quite deliberate, allowing you to really sit with the characters’ emotional states. The performances feel raw, unrefined, yet genuine, which gives it an almost documentary-like feel at times. The film’s exploration of isolation and friendship against a backdrop of quiet suburban life has a certain authenticity that's hard to shake off.
