Spawn (1997) has this gritty, dark tone that really sets it apart from other superhero flicks of its time. Directed by Mark A.Z. Dippé, the film dives deep into themes of betrayal and redemption, wrapped in a chaotic blend of action and fantasy. The practical effects, especially the creature designs, have a certain rawness that you don’t see often today. You can feel the struggle of Al Simmons, played by Michael Jai White, as he navigates his new reality as a hellspawn. The pacing is a bit uneven at times, but it’s part of that '90s charm. There’s also a unique atmosphere created by the visual style that reflects the internal conflict of the character. Definitely a distinct piece in the comic book adaptation genre.
