Species: The Awakening is a bit of a mixed bag, but it has its moments. Directed by Nick Lyon, it leans heavily into those horror and sci-fi tropes that you either love or roll your eyes at. The atmosphere is pretty tense, especially in the early scenes as Dr. Hollander tries to handle the fallout of his genetic experiments. Miranda's transformation is visually striking, with some decent practical effects that stand out amidst the CGI. The pacing feels off at times, but there's a raw energy to the story that keeps it engaging. Performances are solid enough, though you can sense the struggle with some of the material. Overall, it’s a peculiar chapter in the Species franchise that explores themes of identity and monstrosity in a rather compelling way.
