St. James Infirmary is an intriguing exploration of death and the odd relationships we form with it. The film captures a surreal yet darkly humorous tone, weaving the stories of its four protagonists with an unsettling atmosphere. You’ve got Anna, who’s romantically involved with a skeleton—just think about that for a moment. Then there's Björn, who can't step outside his door for fear of death, and Lucy, who embraces theatrical suicide as a form of art. Lars is perhaps the most unsettling; his daily chats with his late mother add an eerie layer to the narrative. The pacing is unique—slow enough to build tension, but never drags. The performances are genuinely engaging, especially in how they navigate their complex characters. It’s definitely distinctive in its approach to existential themes, supported by some clever practical effects too.
This film seems to hover under the radar in collector circles, perhaps due to its obscure director and limited release. I’ve seen just a few formats circulating, mostly DVD, which makes it relatively scarce. Collectors interested in offbeat cinema or dark comedies should keep an eye out, as it definitely offers something different and quirky that stands apart from mainstream offerings.
