State of Grace really captures the grit of Hell's Kitchen in the late '80s. The film is steeped in a moody atmosphere, with Joanou’s direction bringing out the raw tension of loyalty and betrayal within the Irish mob. Sean Penn delivers a nuanced performance as Terry Noonan, navigating the murky waters of love and crime. The pacing is deliberate but engaging, allowing the audience to really feel the weight of the characters' decisions. And then there’s the practical effects during some of the more intense sequences—they hold up quite well, adding to the film's authenticity. The dynamic between the characters, especially with Jackie and Kathleen, feels complex and layered, which makes the whole thing feel more real. It’s not your typical crime drama—definitely has its own vibe.
