Stereomongrel is quite the curious little piece, running just twelve minutes but cramming in a lot of atmosphere. The film captures this interesting tension between high and low culture through the eyes of a twelve-year-old girl. You can really feel the weight of those worlds colliding, especially in the museum setting – it feels both sterile and alive at the same time. The use of Super 35 mm gives it a textured look that enhances the surreal quality of the visuals. The pacing is deliberate, almost dreamlike, allowing the viewer to absorb the visual contrasts. And while the director remains a mystery, the performances, especially from the young lead, have this raw, genuine quality that draws you in. It’s a distinct exploration of perspective and perception, one that lingers after it’s over.
