Strangeland is one of those films that you either find intriguing or deeply unsettling. The atmosphere is thick with dread, and Captain Howdy’s whole aesthetic—piercings, tattoos—captures a certain subculture that was pretty fresh back in '98. The pacing ebbs and flows, giving you moments to breathe before plunging you back into the horror of Howdy’s mind games. The practical effects, though not always polished, add a rawness to the torture scenes that feels visceral. The performances are a mixed bag, but it’s the sheer audacity of the concept that sticks with you. Themes of obsession and the darker sides of the internet are explored in a way that feels oddly prescient now. It’s definitely a unique ride in the horror genre.
