Stranger on the Run is a curious piece from Don Siegel, melding the Western with a TV movie format. The atmosphere is this gritty, oppressive desert landscape that really captures the sense of isolation and desperation. You have a drifter, played by the solid Henry Fonda, who’s caught in this wild power play against a sheriff who’s got more than just law on his mind. The pacing is tight, with a palpable tension, and the way Siegel builds the threat of the posse is quite compelling. The practical effects aren’t flashy, but they fit the tone perfectly. It’s not your standard shoot-'em-up, more a reflection on survival and justice, or the lack thereof. Definitely a unique watch in the genre.
