Strawman is a curious little film that plays with loneliness and friendship in a really subtle way. The pacing is slow, almost meditative, allowing you to really soak in the desolation of Angel’s world. Clare Lickona does a nice job crafting a unique atmosphere, where a broken-down scarecrow becomes a sort of confidant for the boy. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows; there’s a rawness in their interaction. The performances feel raw and genuine—a young actor really holds his own against this inanimate object, which is no small feat. The practical effects on the scarecrow are surprisingly effective, lending it a haunting quality that lingers. It’s a small, quiet piece that might not appeal to everyone but has its own charm for those who appreciate the unconventional.
