Surf Grifters is one of those quirky crime flicks that mixes laid-back coastal vibes with the tension of a heist gone wrong. Set against the backdrop of Manhattan Beach, the film does a decent job of capturing that sun-soaked atmosphere, yet underneath it all, there's this creeping sense of desperation among the characters. Duke and Malcolm's chemistry is pretty watchable, and the dynamic with Mister Benson and his nephew Robert adds a layer of intrigue. The pacing does have its lulls, but that gives it a certain charm, like a lazy summer day that suddenly turns hectic. While the performances aren't award-winning, they fit the casual tone of the film. It's definitely an indie vibe, and the practical effects, while not groundbreaking, serve the story well enough.
