Sword of the Dead is this interesting blend of samurai action and zombie horror. The ronin, returning to his cursed island, feels the weight of his past and the eerie atmosphere is palpable. The pacing is a bit uneven at times, but it adds to that feeling of dread, you know? The practical effects are quite impressive for a lower budget, especially with the zombies—they've got a real grotesque charm to them. Performances are solid, capturing that mix of honor and desperation. There's a theme of redemption woven throughout, which gives the whole zombie apocalypse thing a more personal angle. It’s not your typical zombie flick, definitely has its own flavor.
