Tall in the Saddle (1944) is one of those Westerns that really embodies the grit and mystery of the genre. Rocklin, played by John Wayne, rides into a town steeped in tension, and the atmosphere is thick with suspicion. The pacing is pretty tight, keeping you engaged as he unravels the murder of the rancher who hired him. The themes of loyalty and justice are well-explored, and there’s a nice mix of action and dialogue that feels authentic for the time. Also, the practical effects in the shootouts are pretty solid, adding to that raw feel of the western frontier. Overall, it’s a decent entry in Wayne’s filmography that showcases some good performances and a palpable sense of danger throughout.
