Tödliche Wende is an interesting slice of mid-90s TV crime drama. It’s got this oppressive atmosphere that really nails the tension among the characters. Four guys from Baden-Baden, respectable on the surface, but out on that sailing trip, you feel the underlying cracks. The pacing ebbs and flows, mirroring the rising panic as they try to cover up the murder of a drug-addicted prostitute. The father of the victim, a local editor, adds an intriguing layer to the story, playing mind games with the friends. Those performances, they’re not overly flashy, but there’s a rawness to them that makes the moral dilemmas hit hard. It’s a look at friendship and betrayal, wrapped in crime and desperation, which is what gives it a unique edge.
