Terminator Salvation is an interesting shift for the franchise. McG goes for a full-on post-apocalyptic vibe, trading the time travel angle for a gritty, war-torn future. You get a sense of desperation and bleakness that hangs over the entire film, and the practical effects mixed with CGI give those battle scenes a raw intensity. Christian Bale as John Connor brings a darker edge to the character, though some might find his performance a bit too intense at times. Sam Worthington as Marcus Wright adds layers of mystery that keep you guessing. The score by Danny Elfman and film's aesthetic really help create that oppressive atmosphere, though it lacks the notable feel of the earlier films. Still, it stands out for its ambition, even if it doesn’t always hit the mark.
