The Birds and the Beasts Were There is a curious little documentary from ’44, directed by André de la Varre. It takes you on a relaxed stroll through the animal parks of Miami, which gives it this warm, nostalgic vibe. You've got the Rare Bird Farm showcasing an assortment of chickens and cranes – there’s something oddly charming about their antics. Then there’s the Monkey Jungle, where humans are caged while monkeys roam free, which is quite the role reversal. Finally, the Parrot Jungle adds a splash of color and sound that’s just delightful. The pacing is leisurely, almost like a day out in the sun, and the practical effects are… well, it’s all very raw and real. It’s a slice of mid-century American life through the lens of wildlife, if that's your thing.
