The Bleak is a pretty raw entry in the splatter horror genre. The film doesn’t shy away from heavy gore and practical effects, which is refreshing. You really feel the physicality of the violence here, which makes it stand out from some of the more CGI-heavy counterparts. The pacing is erratic, which adds to the unsettling atmosphere – it builds tension and then just explodes into chaos. Themes of despair and isolation are woven throughout, giving it an underlying bleakness that matches its title. The performances vary, but there's an earnest passion that you can sense, which is a nice touch in indie horror like this. It’s not polished, and that’s part of its charm.
