The Blue Years is one of those films that captures a very specific kind of melancholy. The setting—an old villa, almost a character in its own right—along with the presence of this scruffy cat, creates a haunting backdrop for the lives of five young people. Their dynamics shift when a flamboyant new housemate arrives, which brings about a transformation that's both chaotic and sincere. The pacing is deliberately languid, allowing the viewer to soak in the atmosphere, the rustling leaves, the peeling wallpaper. Performances are understated, yet they carry a weight that feels real. There's a rawness here, a sense of community that forms out of necessity rather than choice, making it distinctive in a sea of coming-of-age dramas.
