The Breed (2006) has a rough charm that creeps in like the fog rolling off the water. Directed by Nicholas Mastandrea, it takes a familiar cabin-in-the-woods setup and injects it with a pack of relentless dogs, which is a twist you don’t see every day. The atmosphere is tense, and the pacing hits a nice rhythm, balancing moments of quiet with bursts of chaos. Practical effects are used effectively, giving those dog attacks an unsettling weight. Performances are solid, especially from the leads who manage to elevate what could have been standard fare. It’s gritty, and while it might not redefine the genre, there’s something about that isolation and the primal fear of being hunted that lingers.
