The Burden, directed by Vuk Babić in '72, really captures that bittersweet vibe of returning home. The pacing feels almost languid, allowing you to soak in the small-town atmosphere contrasted with the protagonist's big city life. It’s heavy on character interactions and the weight of unfulfilled dreams, especially the lingering tension with his old love who’s struggling for work. There’s a real sense of nostalgia and loss as he reconnects with his past, while also grappling with the changes in his friends, especially that one who’s come back from Germany flush with cash. The performances are raw, pulling you into their world. The film's distinctiveness lies in its exploration of what it means to belong, or not, and the struggles of youth caught between two worlds.
