The Core is one of those sci-fi flicks that leans heavily into the 'what if' territory. Jon Amiel's direction brings a mix of tension and adventure as Dr. Josh Keyes and his team try to save the world from a failing core. The pacing is a bit uneven, especially in the first act, but once they get into the journey, the stakes feel palpable. The practical effects—mostly for the underground visuals—add a nice touch. The ensemble cast, including Aaron Eckhart and Hilary Swank, gives it a solid enough performance, even if the script is a bit cheesy at times. It’s definitely a product of its era, but there's something about those 2000s disaster flicks that has its own charm.
Released in 2003, runtime of 135 minutes.Visual effects mixed with practical effects for realism.Filmed in various locations, including Toronto and California.Features a notable score by composer Tyler Bates.
