The Crusader (1922) is a solid example of a Fox Western, showcasing the rugged charm of William Russell in the lead role. The film has this gritty, dusty atmosphere typical of the genre, and the pacing moves along nicely, keeping you engaged. Russell's performance is grounded, playing a miner who gets tangled up with George Webb's slippery swindler, which creates this nice cat-and-mouse dynamic. Helen Ferguson adds an interesting layer as well, given their real-life connection. The practical effects for the period aren't as flashy as some later films, but they serve the story well. Themes of trust and deception run through it, giving it some depth amidst the shootouts and horse chases. It's definitely an interesting watch for fans of early Westerns.
