The Dark Backward is one of those oddball comedies that really carves its own niche. Adam Rifkin’s direction gives it this bizarre, off-kilter atmosphere, almost like you’re in a fever dream. The pacing is erratic, which fits with the absurdity of the story. You’ve got this garbage man-turned-comedian who, despite his buddy's encouragement, is hilariously terrible. The practical effects for that third arm growing out of his back are something else – definitely adds to the weird vibe. The performances really sell the absurdity, with the lead capturing that desperate need for validation. There’s this darker undercurrent about ambition and delusion that keeps it from being just another silly comedy.
