So, The Dark Hammock is this intriguing thriller that plays with the whole coming-of-age thing but adds a twist with its premise. You’ve got these two guys, Chad and Ryan, trying to assert their manhood on what seems like a typical camping trip with their girlfriends. The tension ramps up, though, when they find a bag of drug money, and that’s when the whole vibe shifts. The atmosphere is thick with this sense of dread, and the pacing, while a bit uneven at times, really captures that feeling of impending doom. There are some solid practical effects, too, which bring a rawness to the film. The performances are pretty compelling; you can feel the desperation as things spiral out of control. Definitely has that gritty edge you don’t see often.
