The Deserter is an interesting blend of action and Western tropes, directed by Burt Kennedy. You get that heavy atmosphere of revenge, and it really shows the psychological toll of war on this cavalry officer. The pacing is a bit unconventional, as it builds tension through his inner turmoil rather than just action scenes. The practical effects are decent for the time—nothing overly flashy, but they get the job done. It’s gritty, and the performances bring a raw edge to the character’s descent into madness. You get a sense of isolation and a personal vendetta that sets it apart from other Westerns of the era. Definitely has that 70s vibe, too. Worth a watch for collectors looking for something a bit different.
