The Duel, directed by Chang Cheh, really captures a raw sense of desperation and betrayal. Tan Jen-chieh’s plight is gritty and absorbing, his journey from innocence to a hunted man is so visceral. The film leans into themes of loyalty and survival, showcasing the darker side of human nature. You’ve got this haunting atmosphere throughout, amplified by the street scenes and Tan’s escalating tension as he evades the Rambler. The pacing is relentless, with moments of stark violence that feel both choreographed and chaotic. Butterfly’s descent into prostitution adds a layer of tragedy that hits hard. The performances are solid, especially the lead’s portrayal of anguish and determination. There’s a certain authenticity in the practical effects that really grounds the action, too.
