The Fiend is this interesting blend of comedy, documentary, and drama. You’ve got Joe, who’s eager to make it big as a rapper, and Max, the aspiring filmmaker, both holed up in this remote Virginia house. At first, it really feels like a light-hearted music doc, but it takes this darker turn as Joe wrestles with his alter-ego. The pacing has a nice ebb and flow, mixing humor with genuine moments of struggle. The practical effects are minimal but effective, adding an eerie quality to Joe's transformation. Performances are raw and unscripted, which gives it an authenticity that’s hard to find. It’s the kind of film that makes you think about the price of ambition versus self-destruction.
