The French Line is quite the curious mix of comedy, music, and romance, centered around Mame Carson, an oil heiress who decides to cruise incognito. The pacing is relaxed, allowing for plenty of musical interludes and humorous situations, which ebb and flow with the ship's atmosphere. It's interesting how Mame's journey touches on themes of identity and societal expectation, as she seeks love devoid of her wealth's influence. The performances are lively, with some really engaging numbers, making the film both light-hearted and somewhat reflective. It doesn’t pull any punches with its retro charm, giving the viewer a taste of the glamor and absurdity of the 50s.
This film had a somewhat limited release and isn't the most commonly found in standard collections, which adds to its appeal for collectors. It was released on DVD in the early 2000s, but finding a clean copy can be a bit of a challenge given its age. The scarcity of certain formats, especially original prints, definitely stirs interest among collectors looking for something that stands apart from typical Hollywood fare of the era.
