The Gambler (2014) offers a tense exploration of addiction and morality. Jim Bennett, played by Mark Wahlberg, is a literature professor living in this strange duality, which the film captures well. Rupert Wyatt’s direction maintains a gritty realism throughout. The pacing sometimes feels erratic, but that’s part of the tension, really. There’s a palpable atmosphere, especially in scenes with John Goodman as the menacing gangster. The cinematography is sleek yet raw, adding layers to Bennett’s spiral. Wahlberg's performance is intense, capturing both charm and desperation without leaning too far into melodrama. It’s a fascinating character study wrapped in a crime thriller package, which makes it distinct from typical gambling flicks.
