The Girl (1996) is an interesting adaptation that digs into the complexities of familial relationships and societal expectations in mid-19th century Yorkshire. Hannah Boyle, played with a quiet intensity, embodies the struggles of an unwanted child, caught between the bitterness of her supposed father’s wife and her own search for belonging. The pacing leans towards the slow burn, allowing the atmosphere of oppression and tension to build, which really immerses you in the era. The performances, particularly from the antagonist, Anne, are strikingly raw and vindictive, embodying the harsh realities of the time. It’s not all flashy - practical effects and a muted color palette give it a sense of authenticity that's hard to shake off. Definitely a layered viewing experience.
